Eurovision scandal as France accused of "monkeying other cultures": BBC

IT's a recurring theme. Today, the BBC report on the French politician who is up in arms about France's entry for the eurovision song contest.

The problem this time? The song is in english.

In 1992, a french government minister, Jacques Toutbon, attempted to stem the tide of english words used in the French language by introducing a number of new laws.

These were meant to ensure that english didn't appear in such places as legal documents or the press, for example.

That's ironic when you consider that 'Toutbon' can be translated as 'Allgood'.

A couple of years ago, Charles Bremner of The Times in London wrote a similar article. This time the row was caused by the iPod. The "official language guardians" insisted it be called la ballado-diffusion
