Monflanquin: a beautiful medieval French town

photo: Monflanquin Office de Tourismephoto: Monflanquin Office de TourismeMonflanquin is one of the prettiest villages in the Lot-et-Garonne region of France. Situated twenty-five kilometers from Bergerac, and north of the Dordogne, it is a wonderful example of a medieval ‘bastide’ town. Like the nearby towns of Castillonnes and Villeneuve-sur-Lot, it was founded in the 13th century during a period in French history when the English owned and ruled much of the land in this area. Today, the English find it just as attractive as they did 800 years ago and the Lot-et-Garonne has some of the most sought after property France is able to offer!

Monflanquin was more fortunate than other bastide towns, escaping severe damage to its buildings and infrastructure during the 100 years war. It is very well preserved, with the original street plan and many of the original houses and civic buildings still standing today.

A superb French property investment

A delight to explore, the medieval winding streets and alleys take you back in time to the bygone age of chivalry. If you’re looking for property for sale in France this village is an ideal location that will charm everyone who visits, bringing them back year after year.

The town is laid out to the typical bastide plan with a central square, the Place des Arcades, which is surrounded by ornate arcades and original French houses. One of these was used by the Black Prince during the 100 years war and is still known as the ‘House of the Black Prince.’ Just off one of the corners of the square is the church, built a little later in the 1600s, but still a beautiful example of historic architecture.

If you’re considering buying French property in Monflanquin, to settle here permanently, or just to stay for a few weeks each year, you will never be bored. Just strolling around the town is a pleasure providing the opportunity to visit the many traditional shops, restaurants, and cafes. There is also a small museum and an outdoor swimming pool. The tourist office in the Place des Arcades provides information about places to visit and local events. During the summer, Monflanquin’s festival is a highlight for all - a traditional medieval celebration during which everyone dresses up to enjoy the falconry displays and medieval market.

The area around the village is stunning with rolling hills, green woods, and gentle valleys. Chateau Biron is not too far away and can be seen from the top of the hill on which Monflanquin is built. This is open to the public and offers a guided tour in French, with an English written translation. There are fine walks all around the area, and just a short drive away are Pujols and Villereal (the latter of which has a medieval market hall that’s well worth a visit). There are also many much smaller, but no less beautiful villages around Monflanquin, and if you’re thinking of buying French property, rural locations in Lot-et-Garonne offer settings that truly take your breath away.
