IT'S that time of year again. The holiday season in France has well and truly kicked off. Monday next is Bastille Day and a national holiday. So the chaos is expected to start this weekend.

WELL, this year they're staying put. Consumer confidence is at a record low in France. According to a survey carried out by the Sud Ouest Dimanche newspaper, 51% of french households have tightened the belt on holiday spending this year.

All other recent studies carried out since the original poll on May 11th have confirmed the trend and since then rising fuel prices have had an even greater impact.
